ChatGPT shopping for Shopify stores in 2026: what changed and what you control

Shopify now sends store catalogs to AI assistants and products show up in ChatGPT by default. What that means for a Shopify store, and what is still up to you.

Key takeaways
  • Since 2026 Shopify products can appear in ChatGPT by default, and buyers check out on the store's own site.
  • Being in the catalog only puts you on the long list; the answer still names a few products.
  • What you control: product data, descriptions, reviews, policies, and where your brand is mentioned.

Shopify stores can now show up in ChatGPT without a separate app or integration. Since 24 March 2026, products on eligible Shopify stores are discoverable in ChatGPT by default through Shopify Catalog, and shoppers who choose one buy it on the store's own checkout. That puts your products on the list ChatGPT picks from. Which products it names still depends on your product data, your pages, your reviews and what other sites say about you.

Here is what changed, what it does for your store, and the parts that are still up to you.

What changed for Shopify stores and ChatGPT?

The main dates, in order:

  • September 2025. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, so shoppers could pay without leaving the chat.
  • 10 December 2025. Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts in its Winter '26 Edition. Shopify Catalog sends products to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Merchants set it up once in the admin, then switch each AI channel on or off.
  • 11 January 2026. Shopify and Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard for AI agents to connect to merchants and buy from them. Shopify said merchants would be able to sell in AI Mode in Google Search and in the Gemini app, managed from the Shopify admin.
  • March 2026. On 24 March, Shopify said products are discoverable in ChatGPT by default, with no separate apps or integrations, and that orders arrive in the admin with ChatGPT referral attribution. The same month, according to Hypotenuse, OpenAI retired Instant Checkout.
  • May 2026. Agentic Storefronts got its own page in the Shopify admin.

How do I check if my Shopify store is in ChatGPT?

Open Sales channels → Agentic in your Shopify admin. Shopify's Help Center says agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores, and that you can manage which AI channels sell your products. Using it means agreeing to Shopify's supplemental terms for the feature.

The Help Center now lists channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. For Google AI Mode and Gemini, products can also arrive through the Google & YouTube channel or Google Merchant Center. For Perplexity, see Perplexity shopping for online stores.

Two things in the admin are worth a look before you change anything:

  • The Agentic Storefronts page. Shopify says it shows how your products perform across AI channels, which queries they rank for, and suggestions to improve your product data.
  • Your orders. Orders from AI channels carry channel or referrer attribution, so you can see which sales came from ChatGPT, and which product pages already turn a recommendation into a sale.

Where do ChatGPT shoppers check out?

On your store. The Help Center says ChatGPT customers complete their purchase on your online store checkout, in an in-app browser or a new tab. Shopify's March announcement adds that your payment methods and checkout customizations carry over, and that you remain the merchant of record and keep the customer relationship.

Other channels can work differently. For Google, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, the Help Center says shoppers can buy in a Shopify-powered checkout inside the channel when direct checkout is active.

For ChatGPT, this means a recommendation lands on your product page or checkout. That page has to match what the answer told the shopper: the price, the stock, the shipping terms.

Does being in Shopify Catalog mean ChatGPT will recommend my products?

It means ChatGPT can find them. Every other Shopify store in your category is in the same catalog, and an answer to a shopping question names only a few products, each with a reason.

Long list, short list.Shopify Catalog puts your products on the long list ChatGPT can choose from. The answer is the short list: a few products, and a reason for each.

Two things decide whether you make the short list. First, Catalog works from what you give it. Shopify says it infers categories, extracts attributes, consolidates variants and groups identical items. Thin listings give it little to infer from, and give ChatGPT little to say about why your product fits the question.

Second, your catalog is one input among several. ChatGPT also reads the web: reviews, buying guides, forums and marketplaces. A rival with weaker product data may still be named ahead of you if the roundups for your category recommend it.

What should a Shopify store change first?

Work through these in order. The first six are changes on your own store, and you can start on them today.

Product category and metafields

Set the product Category from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy on every product. Then fill in the category metafields it unlocks, such as size, material or colour. Shopify adds some by default and suggests others. Fill in Product type and Vendor too, and put GTINs, UPCs or EANs in each variant's Barcode field where your products have them. The bulk editor makes this quick.

Since Catalog consolidates variants, give options plain names (Size, Colour, Material) and values a shopper would type, such as “Queen” or “King”. Add several images to each product, and give each one alt text that says what it shows.

Descriptions that say who the product is for

Open each description with what the product is and who it is for. Then give the specs shoppers compare, two or three use cases, and answers to the questions you get by email. Keep repeated specs in metafields so your theme shows them the same way on every product. Our guide to product descriptions AI can recommend shows a before and after.

Structured data in your theme

Many current themes, including Dawn, add Product structured data to product pages. Test one product page in Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator, and check that price, availability, brand and, once you have reviews, a rating appear. If something is missing, ask your theme developer or use a structured data app.

Reviews

Install a review app such as Judge.me, Yotpo, Okendo or Loox, and switch on its option to add ratings to your structured data if it has one. Turn on review requests a few days after delivery. Reviews that load only through a script may be missed by crawlers that do not run scripts.

Policies and the Knowledge Base app

Write your refund and shipping policies under Settings → Policies. Edit Shopify's templates so they match what you actually do, and link both in your footer menu. Shopify's December announcement also introduced a Knowledge Base app, where you store policies, FAQs and brand voice so AI agents can answer shoppers' questions accurately. Keep what you put there in line with your policy pages.

robots.txt and llms.txt

Shopify generates robots.txt for you, and it can only be changed through a robots.txt.liquid template in your theme. If your theme has one, check that it does not block OAI-SearchBot, which OpenAI uses for ChatGPT search, or PerplexityBot. Blocking GPTBot only opts you out of OpenAI's model training; its crawler documentation says the two settings are independent.

Shopify may already serve an llms.txt on your store for AI agents. Open yourstore.com/llms.txt and read what it says. If it is missing, for example on a headless storefront, publish one from the host that serves your storefront. llms.txt is a proposal, and assistants do not promise to read it, so treat it as a small extra.

Mentions outside your store

List the sites ChatGPT cites for your category, such as editorial roundups, Reddit threads and marketplaces, and work on being mentioned there. This is slower and earned. The ChatGPT playbook covers how.

How do I see what ChatGPT recommends to my shoppers?

Shopify's Agentic page shows how your own products do in Shopify's channels. To see who is named instead of you, ask the questions your shoppers ask and read the answers, more than once each, since answers vary.

The free 7BE scan does that for any public Shopify store. It asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode 10 shopper questions built from your catalog, and shows the brands named instead of you and 8 readiness checks. The 7BE Shopify app, in early access, repeats the questions every week: 50 on Starter ($49 a month), or 200 on Growth ($149 a month), which adds Gemini and Claude.
