- AI assistants can read a WooCommerce store, but nothing hands them your catalog automatically the way Shopify does.
- Open crawler access, product structured data, a clean product feed and visible reviews do most of the work.
- Check what assistants actually answer for your category before and after each change.
AI assistants can read and recommend products from a WooCommerce store, but nothing hands them your catalog the way Shopify Catalog does for Shopify stores. They learn about your products from your public pages, your structured data, any product feeds you set up, and what other sites say about you. So a WooCommerce store has a short list of jobs: open crawler access, check product structured data, send a clean feed, show reviews and policies, and measure the answers before and after each change.
How is WooCommerce different from Shopify for AI shopping?
Shopify stores are connected to AI channels through Shopify Catalog, and since March 2026 their products are discoverable in ChatGPT by default. Our post on ChatGPT shopping for Shopify stores covers what that does and does not do.
WooCommerce has nothing like it built in. Your store is your own WordPress site, so assistants find it the way they find any website, and any feed to an AI platform is one you set up yourself. That is more work. It also means you decide what each assistant gets.
What do AI assistants read on a WooCommerce store?
- Your public pages. Product, category and policy pages, fetched by crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and PerplexityBot for Perplexity. Google AI Mode is part of Google Search and uses Google's regular crawler.
- Structured data. The schema.org Product data on each product page, which WooCommerce adds on its own.
- The Store API. WooCommerce's Store API is public and needs no key, so any agent or tool can list your products, with prices, from it.
- Product feeds. Google Merchant Center, and any feed you send to another platform.
- Other sites. Reviews, buying guides, forums and marketplaces that mention your products.
To see what the Store API shows, open this address with your own domain:
https://yourstore.com/wp-json/wc/store/v1/products?per_page=5If it returns an error, a security plugin may be limiting the WordPress REST API for visitors who are not logged in. Check its settings.
How do I let AI crawlers into a WooCommerce store?
Open yourstore.com/robots.txt. WordPress serves its own robots.txt unless a real robots.txt file sits in your site's root folder, and many SEO plugins let you edit it from the admin, so check both. Look for groups like these:
# Groups like these keep search crawlers for
# ChatGPT and Perplexity out of the whole store.
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Disallow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Disallow: /Remove them if you want those assistants to cite you. You do not need to add anything in their place: a crawler you do not name follows your User-agent: * rules. Before you block any crawler, know what its name controls:
- OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT search. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
- GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. OpenAI says each setting is independent, so blocking GPTBot does not affect ChatGPT search.
- PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity's search results. Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.
- Google-Extended has no crawler of its own. Google's crawler documentation describes it as a robots.txt token that Google reads as a control signal.
Two more places to check. Under Settings → Reading, keep “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” switched off. And some hosting and network services, Cloudflare among them, have settings that block AI crawlers whatever your robots.txt says.
Does WooCommerce add product structured data?
Yes. WooCommerce adds schema.org Product data to product pages, with price, availability and, once a product has reviews, its rating. Some themes and plugins remove or replace it, so test a product page in Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator. SEO plugins can add more, such as the brand.
The data is only as good as the fields behind it. On every product, fill in:
- a price and stock status, on the product and on each variation;
- the GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN field in the Inventory tab, which WooCommerce added in version 9.2, where your products have one;
- a real category, named the way shoppers search, in place of the default “Uncategorized”;
- the specs shoppers compare, as attributes under Product data → Attributes;
- a main description that says who the product is for, as well as the short description.
For the description, our guide to product descriptions AI can recommend shows what to say and in what order.
How do I get WooCommerce products into AI shopping feeds?
Each assistant has its own route today:
- Google AI Mode: it draws on Google's Shopping Graph, which includes the product data merchants send through Google Merchant Center. The free Google for WooCommerce plugin, formerly Google Listings & Ads, syncs your products to Merchant Center.
- ChatGPT: OpenAI's commerce documentation says product feed onboarding is open to approved partners, with an application form at chatgpt.com/merchants. Without a feed, ChatGPT can still find your products through search. Shopify also offers an Agentic plan that lets you keep your existing online store and list products in Shopify Catalog for AI channels. Read its terms and fees before you decide.
- Perplexity: its merchant program was free at launch. According to WebFX, stores on Shopify or BigCommerce, or integrated with PayPal, have routes in, and the program is for merchants that sell and ship to the US. WooCommerce stores apply through its short form. More in Perplexity shopping for online stores.
Whatever the route, keep prices and stock in the feed in step with the site. A feed that disagrees with your product page sends the shopper to a page that contradicts the answer they just read.
How should a WooCommerce store handle reviews for AI?
Reviews are built in. Under WooCommerce → Settings → Products, turn on product reviews and star ratings, and consider the options to show a “verified owner” label and to accept reviews only from verified owners. WooCommerce then adds the rating to its structured data.
A review plugin can add request emails after delivery and photo reviews. If you use one, check that reviews still appear in the page itself and that the rating still reaches the structured data. Reviews that load only through a script may be missed by crawlers. Never buy or invent reviews: in the US, the FTC's rule on fake reviews bans them, along with paying for positive ones.
Which policy pages do AI assistants need?
Shoppers ask for free returns, fast delivery or shipping to their country, and an assistant can only point them to a store whose policies say so in public. You need two pages:
- Refund and returns. Recent WooCommerce installs create a draft Refund and Returns Policy page. Find it under Pages, edit it to match what you actually do, and publish it.
- Shipping. Where you ship, how long it takes and what it costs, in plain words.
Link both from your footer, where shoppers and crawlers can find them from any page.
Should a WooCommerce store add llms.txt?
It is cheap, so yes, with low expectations. llms.txt is a 2024 proposal for a plain text file that tells language models what a site is and where its key pages are. It is not a standard, and assistants do not promise to read it. Upload llms.txt to your site's root folder, the one that holds wp-config.php, through your host's file manager or SFTP, or let an SEO plugin generate one. Keep it short: what you sell, who it is for, and links to your main categories and your policy pages. The AI-readiness checklist has an example.
How do I check what AI assistants say about my WooCommerce store?
Before you change anything, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the questions your shoppers ask, and record who is named and why. Ask each question more than once, since answers vary. Then ask again a week or two after each change, and compare.
The free 7BE scan does a first pass on any public WooCommerce store: 10 shopper questions in the three assistants, the brands named instead of you, and 8 readiness checks, with no signup. The 7BE WooCommerce plugin is in early access. It adds one admin page, brings weekly tracking from the 7BE app into your WooCommerce admin, and only reads public data.
Questions
Does WooCommerce send my products to ChatGPT automatically?
No. WooCommerce has no built-in catalog feed to AI assistants. ChatGPT can find your products through search, and OpenAI accepts product feeds from approved partners who apply at chatgpt.com/merchants.
Does WooCommerce add product structured data?
Yes. WooCommerce adds schema.org Product data to product pages, with price, availability and, once a product has reviews, its rating. Test a product page, since some themes and plugins remove or replace it.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove my store from Google AI Mode?
Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search, and AI Mode is part of Search. It does control whether Google may use your content for Gemini models and for grounding in the Gemini app.
Can a WooCommerce store join Perplexity's merchant program?
Yes, by applying through Perplexity's merchant form. At launch the program was free and, according to WebFX, open to merchants that sell and ship to the US. Check Perplexity's current terms.
